At this year’s International Home and Housewares Show in Chicago, March 11 – 13, Zojirushi is unveiling their new and wonderful $215 high-end RIZO, which steams veggies, fish, and chicken, makes rice and keeps everything warm AND has a new setting that allows it to make risotto.

I love risotto, that rich, wet Arborio rice dish found in Italian restaurants and in kitchens at home where cooks labor over the stove to produce this delicacy. It’s a labor-intensive process, let me tell you!

For many, many years we have enjoyed our trusty Zojirushi rice cooker.  It’s an often-used appliance in the kitchens of Gadget Central. I see the brand in Japanese restaurants on their industrial-size rice cookers behind the sushi bar and on the long cold cases atop the sushi bar that hold their fish before it becomes sushi and sashimi.  If you’re not familiar with the name, let me tell you, it’s at the top of the heap.  They also make excellent bread makers and other small appliances, which you can find on their Website.

When I learned about this new and very stylish product, I could not wait for the chance to use it.  When it arrived, I went to work.  It’s small and family-sized, with about a three-cup capacity.

Following instructions, I sautéed some onions and mushrooms in a little bit of olive oil and set aside the mixture.  Next, I put the rice in the empty pan also with just a little olive oil. After warming it for only about 30 seconds, I put the rice into the rice cooker, added chicken broth, a pinch or saffron, the reserved onions and mushrooms, closed the lid and pushed the button marked Risotto. In just a little while, the tone let me know it was ready.

I figure it took me only about 10% of the normal time it takes to produce delicious risotto, and the variations can be endless.  Whether as a main dish or a side dish, risotto, now easier than ever to produce, can be a mainstay instead of an occasional dish, thanks to this new kitchen essential from Zojirushi.

If you’re ever made risotto yourself, you know it is a labor-intensive process, but this counter-top appliance makes that a thing of the past.

I tried steaming fish and chicken with veggies, too. Perfect!

If you’re looking for something new for your kitchen, something useful and wonderful, as well as stylish, you’re going to want to look into the Zojirushi RIZO Micom Rice Cooker and Warmer (the long name).  I’d say from my testing, it’s worth the investment.  Available in stainless steel, yellow and white, there’s a color for every décor!

Find it at stores throughout the US and online.
