I haven’t spent a lot of time looking into radar detectors, but this one from Cobra caught my attention.  The XRS R9G, retailing for $440 (but available for a lot less online), has useful features that any driver might find of benefit.

In addition to the class-leading radar and laser speed detector detection over an amazing 12 bands, the XRS R9G has a GPS locator that mates to its internal database of red light and speed camera locations.  This unique and Cobra-verified database is updated on line and can be updated in the unit by connecting it to a Windows PC.  In my tests, it alerted me as I came into the vicinity of these controlled intersections and then as I became very close, making certain I was aware that the upcoming intersection was one to which I should pay particular attention.

Others may have similar notification, but Cobra takes the time to assure that the locations are verified as accurate.  Nice touch, Cobra!

The unit also features Cobra’s exclusive StrobeAlert that works with tens of thousands of emergency vehicles equipped with traffic-light controlling strobe emitters. These emitters trigger advance warning of the presence and approach of emergency vehicles.

I also found the installation of the unit to be very easy.  Best when stuck to the upper part of the windshield to the right of the rearview mirror with the provided mounting pieces (of tape), the unit sticks perfectly well and is attached by a short cable to the GPS component.  Using the provided parts and pieces, the power wire can be affixed through stick-on clips around the glass perimeter so it is almost undetectable and does not interfere with visibility.  The unit comes with both a power outlet plug as well as wiring that can be permanently hard-wired to the vehicle’s electrical system.

With the main pieces safely in place, they communicate via 2.4 GHz wireless technology with the supplied wireless remote control what has a crisp, color, OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) 1.5-inch screen.  The screen doubles as a multi-function indicator where all the user-defined settings are made and displayed.  Available info includes radar band detected, eight-point digital compass and car battery voltage.  The remote uses a Lithium ion battery that charges quickly with the supplied vehicle power adapter, yet can operate on its own internal battery for up to 40 hours.  The pocket-sized remote can be held in it supplied holster that can clip to the visor or it can be held with clips to the A/C vent outlet.
